Astro Secrets to Avoiding a High-Calorie Splurge

Have you ever had the urge to stand underneath a soft-serve ice cream machine, mouth agape? Or are you more likely to fantasize about having a bottomless bowl of guacamole to yourself? Whatever your sun sign and guilty pleasure, there’s a lower calorie version that can satisfy your cravings in flash. Let astrology show you the healthier way.

ARIES: Bread
As far as French inventions go, you’ll take the baguette over the bicycle any day. (It turns out the French also invented mayonnaise — how convenient!) But your excitement over bread doesn’t stop in France. You embrace the whole world of bread, from Italian garlic bread to San Francisco Sourdough. Why give it up completely? Slice it thinner and you’ll be thinner as well.

TAURUS: Salty snacks
The adage ‘You can’t eat just one’ is an understatement. Whether it’s chips, popcorn, crackers or pretzels, when you’re in the right mood, the whole bag is at risk. It doesn’t help that Taurus is the sign that rules the appetite. But have no fear, your remedy is simple. Buy a smaller bag.

GEMINI: Fast food
You do lots of things fast, Gemini, and fast food fits perfectly into your schedule. But your favorite burger and fries is likely to go off the calorie charts. For instance, a Big Mac and fries together are over a thousand calories, and that’s without cheese or ketchup! Do your burger patty at home with lettuce, tomatoes and pickle — and without a bun — for around 300 calories.

CANCER: Comfort foods
You could curl up with your favorite comfort foods any night of the week. But if you eat them every day, your likely to get _un_comfortable with the number on the scale. Luckily there’s always a lighter way to do mac and cheese, or mashed potatoes and gravy.

LEO: Dinner
The lion wants a full meal in the evening, and the more courses the better. The problem is that you often don’t realize when you are completely full until twenty minutes past the point of no return, and the result is an overstuffed belly. You can avoid eating too much by eating very slowly. Put your fork down between bites and savor each morsel.

christmasVIRGO: Cookies
Remember the ones you made with mom? Licking the batter from the hand blender, the smell of them baking, whisking the icing on top … the image is just as sweet as the actual cookie. Most cookies wouldn’t be so bad for you if they weren’t so enormous. Opt for the smallest size, or a 100 calorie pre-packaged treat.

LIBRA: Cheese
Glorious cheese! It’s so versatile. It knows no borders — a good ol’ American slice melted over your tuna sandwich, or a wheel of brie served on a silver platter. Unfortunately, reduced calorie cheese often tastes like gourmet erasers. So when it’s time to curb your habit, it’s best to go cold turkey (with a bit of mustard, hold the cheese!).

SCORPIO: Baked goods
As far as you’re concerned, Betty Crocker should be canonized as the patron saint of ovens. Flaky biscuits, gooey brownies, an apple pie that’s crispy brown on top — how could you be expected to resist any of them? The low-cal versions of these foods that substitute light margarine for butter, or egg whites for whole eggs, are often almost as tasty.

SAGITTARIUS: Pizza
You have many wonderful associations with pizza. Just think of all the times you’ve sat around the table with your friends and enjoyed laughter with a large pie, deep with cheesy toppings. You can still have your pizza and your waistline, too — if you stop at one piece. Fill up on unsweetened iced tea between bites.

CAPRICORN: Ice cream
When you open a fresh carton, you can almost hear the tinkling melody of the man in the truck coming around the corner on a hot day. Topped with chocolate sauce, or buried in pillowy marshmallow clouds, nuts and pineapple, with a cherry on top, the cool, creamy goodness can’t be beat. That’s why it should be saved for special occasions — say, once a month.

AQUARIUS: Peanut butter
This food has been around since mankind has had the tools to crush a nut. From the Incans to Africans to Spanish, hundreds of generations of humans have delighted in this high-calorie, high-fat food getting stuck to the roof of their mouths. Ever try Better ‘n Peanut Butter? It’s advertised as featuring 85% less fat, 40% less calories and 100% great taste.

PISCES: Chocolate
There’s a reason chocolate is one of the most popular flavors of the world. It transcends the responsibility of a food. It changes the very chemistry of the person eating it. It’s like biting into love and happiness. Get your fix and stay on your healthy-eating regiment by trading your white and milk chocolate for bite-sized, individually wrapped squares of lower-fat dark chocolate.
