Lower And Higher Octave Planets
There are three sets of octaval planets within the arena of astrology:
- Mercury/Uranus,
- Venus/Neptune,
- Mars/Pluto.
Each inner, personal planet (Mercury, Venus and Mars) is a lower, subjectional vibration and resonance of its correlating higher, collective cousin. This would of course imply a transmission association by and between the higher and lower octaval planet much in the same way where in Music Theory the pianist knows that a “High-C Note” is a higher tonal vibration and resonance of every single c-note lower in octave within the Scale.
Attend, please
Mercury is the lower vibrational octave and resonance of Uranus because it is exalted in Aquarius, the sign of Uranus’ natural rulership.
It is also the lower vibration of Uranus by virtue of the fact that Uranus rules and governs the Collective and Universal (infinite) Mind where Mercury rules and governs the subjective, individual (finite) mind.
Secondly, Venus is Neptune’s lower vibrational octave and resonance because it is exalted in Pisces – the sign of Neptune’s natural rulership. It is also Neptune’s lower vibration due to the fact that Neptune governs the most elevated form of spiritual and universal love – where Venus governs love that is more personal and subjective in nature. Moreover, Neptune also governs values that are spiritual, mystical and universal in nature – where its lower vibrations’ values are more personal, subjective and sensual in character.
Lastly, Mars is Pluto’s lower vibrational octave and resonance because it is the ancient ruler, and modern day co-ruler of Scorpio – the sign of Pluto’s natural rulership. Mars also rules and governs “the lower nature of the scorpion” in the sign of Scorpio. This principle is graphically depicted in Scorpio’s symbol of the Phoenix rising up from ashes of destruction and desolation. Since Pluto specifically governs the Collective principle and process of evolutionary transformation and metamorphosis by vehicle of death and rebirth, (reincarnation) – Mars governs the temporal process of subjective transition by vehicle of actions taken based upon personal desire. Pluto then is quite literally the Phoenix that is rising up and above from the ashes of Mars’ destruction and desolation. (Old Buddhist saying: “the root cause of all human suffering is desire (attachment)….”).
Collectively, these three sets of planetary octavals and vibrations constitute what is known as the threefold, Triadic Astrological Body (TAB). By “threefold triadic body”, it is submitted that these three primary sets of astrological octavals govern the holistic attributes that constitute an individual’s soul:
- The mental body (Mercury/Uranus),
- The emotional body (Venus/Neptune), and
- The desire body (Mars/Pluto
These specific attributes and characteristics of a soul have been referred to within much past metaphysical/occult literature.

To determine the karmic (transmigration) age and evolutionary/spiritual stage of development of any one of these three sets of octaval planets, the astrologer must first determine the phasal relationship by and between each respective lower and higher vibrational octave.
Phasal relationship quite simply correlates to the natural quarterly phases of the moon:
First Quarter Phase (0 to 90 degrees)
Waxing Conjunction to the Waxing Square.
Birth, Inception; purely instinctive and autonomous without developed awareness.
Second Quarter Phase (90 to 180 degrees)
Waxing Square to Waxing Opposition (Full Moon Phase).
Utilization; the establishment of new uses for the lower, instinctual
Energies experienced during the First Quarter Phase with a more developed, conscious intent.
Third Quarter Phase (180 to 270 degrees)
Waning Opposition to Waning Square.
Adaptation; this is where the individual leaves their mark in the external world within a societal context. This phase is primarily experienced in an emphasized social/external arena.
Fourth Quarter Phase (270 to 360 degrees)
Waning Square to Waning, Balsamic Conjunction.
Integration; this phase places the emphasis upon turning the individual toward the Infinite, Universal, and Spiritual aspects of the planetary energies involved. The spiritual ramifications of everything the individual did with respect to the first Three Quarters utilizing the planetary energies aforementioned will Bear fruit.
Phasal relationship is an evolutionary system in astrology consisting of the entire 360 degrees of the natural zodiac circle. What determines which fixed, starting degree of this phasal cycle is determined by the position of the higher octaval planet.
This calls for an illustration:
Let’s say Uranus is at zero degrees of Leo and Mercury (the lower octave) is at zero degrees of Cancer. An astrologer would first note the “fixed” position of Uranus, and then; scanning counter-clockwise from this fixed position of Uranus in natural zodiacal sequence, would see that Mercury is 330 degrees away from Uranus. In other words, Mercury is in a 330 degree phasal relationship to its higher vibration, in Fourth Quarter Phase. Conversely, if Uranus were at zero degrees Leo and Mercury were at zero degrees of Libra, Mercury then would be in a 60 degree phasal relationship to its higher vibration Uranus in First Quarter Phase.
In the first example, Mercury is considered to be “old” with respect to its evolutionary relationship with its higher vibration Uranus. In the second example, it is considered to be “new” in this regard. To better understand the distinction of this difference, the authors will define the evolutionary process that Mercury (the lower octaval) is subject to:
As was pointed out earlier, Mercury is considered to be a lower planetary vibration of its higher vibrationary cousin Uranus because both of these planets govern Mind. The distinction and difference there is that Mercury governs the subjective, individual mind – where Uranus governs Universal, and Infinite Mind. Mercury is considered to be a lower vibration because it is of a more limited, finite and subjective version of Uranus, higher, more infinite attributes.
Uranus then, being the higher octaval vibration does not need, nor does it require any evolution. Mercury needs to evolve and metamorphosize itself progressively into becoming more like its higher vibration…it needs to progressively vibrate at the higher, elevated rate and resonance as Uranus does. This principle of “phasal relationship” between these two planets operates by transmission, and serves to harmonically re-align the lower vibrational planets; attributes with that of its higher octaval. This implies of course, that there once was a former, past state and condition whereby both lower and higher vibrations were in a perfect state of harmonic alignment. They both originally resonated at the same vibration. Somehow, this perfect alignment was dissolved or separated….
The lower planetary vibration then, is a symbolic astrological depiction of this original separation.

As an aside, “Evolution” is defined as being the transformation from a former, inferior state of being – into a more elevated, superior state. This definition also implies that evolution is, quite literally, a force that exerts a progressive “pull” or impulse upon that which is considered to be in an inferior state into becoming that which is more elevated and superior. This is why the higher vibrational octave transmits or emits its evolutionary energies or impulses harmonically by vehicle of phasal relationship upon the lower vibration, and not the other way around.

To return to the earlier case examples of Mercury/Uranus – In the first example, Mercury is considered “old” in its evolutionary phasal relationship to Uranus, and in the second example it is considered “new” in this respect. The “newer” Mercury is in regard to its phasal relationship to its higher vibration, the more Mercury would be manifesting itself predominately through its lower attributes (eg: “Mercurial” attributes). However, the “older” the phasal relationship that Mercury is in with regard to its higher vibration Uranus, the more Mercury would begin to take on and manifest through the higher, more elevated Uranian attributes. Ultimately, this phasal process which begins at the Waxing Conjunction in First Quarter Phase – concludes when Mercury journey’s full circle through the entire 360 degree evolutionary cycle to return to Uranus at the Waning, Balsamic Conjunction in Fourth Quarter Phase. When this occurs, there is no more distinction that separates the vibrations of both of these planets; Mercury has evolved and metamorphosize itself into becoming Uranus in effect. This is, of course, the entire purpose behind the phasal evolutionary process.
This principle of phasal relationship also applies equally as well to the natures of Venus and Neptune as well as to Mars and Pluto. Venus would ultimately metamorphosize itself vibrationally into Neptune, and Mars into Pluto. They all, ultimately at journey’s end would resonate vibrationally as one and the same, harmonically re-aligning.

Phasal relationship additionally correlates to the process and principle of the individual souls’ evolutionary transmigration (reincarnation) with respect to its higher vibration: The Universal/Infinite Soul (eg: God; that which originally created and maintains the individual soul). This is where the threefold, Triadic Astrological Body (TAB) referred to earlier becomes a relevant factor and consideration.
To holistically determine the individual souls’ stage of evolutionary phasal Separation or Return (“newness” or “oldness”) with respect to the Universal/Infinite Soul, the astrologer must first carefully note the exact phasal distances of each of the lower and higher octaval planets in each of the three octaval sets; then, perform the following calculations:
Mercury to Uranus: ___________degrees phasal distance
Venus to Neptune: ___________degrees phasal distance
Mars to Pluto: + ___________degrees phasal distance
= ___________Total Phasal Distances
It is recommended that the astrologer add all three phasal distance to arrive at a “Total Phasal Distances” figure, which should then be divided by three. The result is a triadic; (composite) phasal distance figure that denotes at which specific Quarterly Phase the individual souls’ evolutionary progression is in with respect to the Universal/Infinite Soul.
Ultimately, the individual soul, like any other lower octaval vibration, eventually returns at 360 degrees in a Waning, Balsamic Conjunction in Fourth Quarter Phase to the Universal Soul. It would then cease to be considered as “individual”, as it would be merging into a perfect evolutionary re-alignment state with its higher vibration, no longer a lower vibration. It would become the Universal/Infinite Soul, the source that had originally sent it upon its long evolutionary journey.
The original separation from the source (higher vibration) of the individual soul has resulted in the evolutionary necessity of reincarnation from one incarnation to the next…to progressively evolve us all back into our original, first causal state of being (resonating at the same rate of vibration). It has been of course, a long and winding road – this evolution through the many mansions of our Father’s house, but one well worth the journey.
