Uranus In Libra

The Uranus in Libra Generation (October 1968-September 1975)

If you need somebody, call my name
If you want someone, you can do the same
If you want to keep something precious
You got to lock it up and throw away the key
If you want to hold onto your possession
Don’t even think about me
If you love somebody, set them free
— Sting

Sting, who has Sun/Saturn and Moon/Neptune in Libra, caught the flavor of the Uranus in Libra generation with this song. So in 1985 when Sting sang, If you love somebody, set them free, the Uranus in Libra generation was just coming of age.

Many of the kids of the Uranus in Libra generation were the children of divorce or the children of hippies. And either way they experienced it, most of them learned to expect the unexpected in relationships. Many people with Uranus in Libra don’t want to settle down, or if they do, they openly chose alternative partnerships, whether gay, straight, or bisexual.

That shouldn’t surprise us. Uranus expresses the energy of the unexpected, the quirky, the original, the rebellious, the disruptive (ADD and ADHD). Aching to be Free! All qualities we’ve been taught to keep out of our relationships: all qualities that sit better within oneself than between two or more people. Yet, Uranus in Libra asks this generation to find ways to be free and considerate, quirky and related, liberated and yet committed. Hard qualities to blend. That’s the cosmic assignment for our 40somethings as Saturn goes over your natal Uranus in Libra.

Those of you born from 1968 to 1975 are in the midst of your ‘mid-life’ crisis years. Some of you will be having your Uranus opposition (the astrological indicator of the mid-life awakening) while Saturn goes over your natal Uranus in Libra.

Oh! Could be trouble! You might succumb to the call of the wild. Unless you pay attention! That’s what Saturn is all about – paying attention with a disciplined focus to what needs to get done. Saturn puts your attention on your relationships (Libra) at the same time as Uranus in Aries will be demanding that you show your true colors. Your awakening will be that the only way to be free in your partnerships is to totally be yourself.

As you can see, it’s kind of counter-intuitive but totally appropriate. Saturn wants to limit and control while Uranus wants to experiment and be free. Don’t let your old fears and rigid thought patterns (Saturn) about relationships (Libra) stop your awakening into freedom (Uranus).

Repression won’t work. This group by far stays away from old fashioned marriage, and yet their task is to integrate the good from the old ways with new vision about the purpose of relationships. Letting in the new doesn’t have to be at the expense of some proper conduct in your relationships.

Relationships used to have certain rules and steps of appropriate conduct. The Uranus in Libra generation broke all the rules. These people were born during the ‘free love’ days of the 60s and by the time they came of relationship age, they were ready to experiment, experiment, experiment! Uranus loves experiments. And also technology. So Uranus in Libra people use Internet dating sites, social networking and any other technology that hooks them up.

Uranus in Libra people love their tribe or group. With Uranus ruling the sign of groups, I wasn’t surprised when I saw my kids hanging out with groups of boys and girls rather than dating one person in high school. Since Saturn is co-ruler of Aquarius with Uranus, we might see the importance of community or your tribe grow in these next two years as well.

Some of the Uranus in Libra generation also have Pluto in Libra. You are the ones who will teach us all how to create partnerships based on equality and freedom, while committing to each other for the long haul. But more on that in our next article!
