Astrology and Intuition

Astrology shows us the style by which we use our intuition. This style is demonstated in our charts by the four elements (fire, earth, water, and air) and the planets the Moon, Uranus and Neptune.

With the elements, we use an instinctive, sense-oriented, emotional or mental style.

Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) give us immediate, instinctive intuition in which there is an ability to act quickly on an impulse that is often correct. For this reason, athletes and warriors often have a lot of fire in their charts. Also, people who use their personalities, such as sales people are often using the fire element.

Earth signs (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo) use their senses in making intuitive decisions. They rely on what they can see, touch, smell, taste or hear as the physical world is their reality.

Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) ,who are naturally intuitive, use feelings as guides to the world of intuition. Feelings can present many images on invisible realms and these are the realms from which water signs derive their ‘knowledge”.

Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) use the mind as their guide to understanding themselves. As the intellectual can be a counterbalance to the intuitional, these signs must find a blend with the feeling part of themselves to tap intuition and apply it to mental self-understanding. They have the capacity for great intellectual insight! In each of the elements, the key is the ability to tap into our natural style of intuition and to trust the messages we get. This is the challenge of the “right brain” part of ourselves.

In addition to the elements there are planets which are naturally intuitive. The Moon, Uranus and Neptune each demonstrate a type of intuitive wisdom .

The Moon, the feeling part of us, is where we get “hunches”and insights if we pay attention to what feelings/emotions are telling us. The challenge is to trust these feelings which often be confusing when not centered. The sign of the Moon is the key to how feelings are felt and expressed. This sign will be in one of the elements and so will combine emotions with an element, intertwining the Moon with a context for expressing it.

While the Moon is personal in nature, Uranus and Neptune are collective in nature. With these two planets, intuition happens “to” us and we receive it from an unconscious part of ourselves that is connected to a larger whole.

Uranus connects us to the “higher mind” which breaks conventional rules and brings intuitive insights in the form of lightning bolts. Here we get a sudden “hit” of awareness of a new way of thinking about our life as well as those around us. These insights help us to break a pattern or mold that has held us back from feeling our individuality and therefore frees us to contribute something unique to the culture.

Neptune is the spiritual planet and it is through the realm of the spirit- faith, letting go and surrender that intuition comes. With Neptune, we let God into our lives and ask for answers from Him! These answers often appear in mysterious synchronous ways, showing us that we are here for a purpose. But Neptune can also be confusing and cloudy as the flood of impressions that this planet creates can dillute our understanding of ourselves. For this reason, a meditative approach is best as we find a center in the midst of myriad thoughts and feelings that are incomprehensible.

We have the opportunity to learn much from our intuition if we trust it! Our astrological chart shows us the style most natural to us in the form of elements and in the 3 planets, the Moon, Uranus and Neptune. But ultimately, intuition is a product of our whole chart (personality) and is cultivated through a practice of watching for clues and following them. These clues can lead us to resolve problems and develop a creative approach to life!
