Gardening by the Zodiac Signs: What to Plant in Your Garden

The weather is improving and it’s time to get outside! Summer is always a great reminder of the beautiful outdoors. Did you know that gardening not only heals your local environment, it improves your health as well? Creating an outdoor space that reflects your inner nature is a great way to invite balance into your life.

Aries Gardener

Your gardening style is like your attitude in life: you want to do it once and move on. Low-maintenance landscapes that include hardy perennials and native shrubs or trees are perfect. This way, your efforts in their first year will be rewarded far into the future.

Taurus Gardener

You gravitate to anything pretty and will enjoy cultivating a flower garden that blooms throughout the season, especially if you include flowers with fragrance. Plant spring blooms as well as plants that flower in the height of summer, and those that offer colored foliage in the fall.

Gemini Gardener

As the sign of the twins, you love pairs of things. Consider planting pairs of different fruit trees as their changing state — from flowers to buds to fruit — will keep you interested throughout the season. In colder climates, pairs of stately evergreens, or seasonal driveway displays, are a good alternative.

Cancer Gardener

Your watery nature is drawn to plants that have lush, supple leaves and those that provide protection for local animals. Hostas and other leafy summer plants are ideal, and silver-tipped birch, spruce and juniper are perfect for winter. A water feature or birdbath is a great addition.

Leo Gardener

Your royal influence means your gardens must be stately. Large-scale plants and ornaments add flair, and sunflowers and other yellow plants are a classic Leo inclusion. Plants with red accents, like leaves or berries, also suit you.

Virgo Gardener

With health one of your sign’s hot topics, gardens that heal are perfect. Consider planting healing herbs and easy-to-grow foods like lettuce, strawberries or tomatoes. You’ll enjoy exploring biodynamic gardening and love the efficiency of a home compost system.

Libra Gardener

Like your fellow Venus-ruled sign Taurus, flowers are best in your home garden. Elegant and colorful lilies as well as roses and tulips are great, but most important in your garden is balance. Include a mix of tall, medium and low plants.

Scorpio Gardener

Privacy is key for you, so a hidden garden is ideal. Surround your outdoor space with protective pergolas, high fences or a tree screen. Rocks suit your solid nature, and your best garden colors are deep purples, dark blues and black.

Sagittarius Gardener

High vistas appeal to you, so plant with height in mind. It’s worth splurging on mature trees to gain instant dramatic impact, and horse statues are a fun, astro-worthy feature! Vines and other climbing plants inspire your free spirit, so consider trailing climbers over trellises.

Capricorn Gardener

Your sometimes hard disposition could be compared to rocks, so stone features are a must. Plants that live for a long time are best, and you’ll need a mature tree or two for stability. Clear boundaries between sections are ideal, and can be instantly created with potted plants and border designs.

Aquarius Gardener

Anything goes in your garden – just as in your life! Mix colors, shapes and textures for a unique landscape. Wind chimes, high-perched bird feeders and plants that enjoy a breeze are perfect.

Pisces Gardener

Soft, free-form and flowing gardens soothe your spirit. Including weeping willows and hanging plants, as well as a water feature of some sort. Shades of the ocean — emerald, turquoise, silver — are best, soft colors like pink, yellow and lilac also speak your language.
